Man Caught on Film Killing a Kitten Officially Indicted
As of February 2026, Ryan Berlanga has been formally indicted on third-degree felony animal cruelty charges. The man was caught on video strangling a kitten to death in a San Antonio, Texas, apartment complex.
Late last year, Alley Cat Allies issued a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man in the red hoodie that appeared on security footage. Within days, the reward brought in a tip on his identity—and Berlanga subsequently turned himself in.
If convicted, Berlanga could face 2 to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine, as well as other potential penalties, including a ban on owning animals.
Now, we’re going to fight for justice in the form of the highest possible penalty for his heinous actions. We’re awaiting pre-trial and trial dates and will keep you updated through the process.
If you see or suspect animal cruelty, learn how to document and report it. Swift action makes all the difference.
A Happy Update on Sparkle and Twinkle After Unique Surgery
One by one (or in this case, by two!) cats whose lives you saved are finding loving homes! Congratulations, Twinkle and Sparkle!
If you’ve been following us, you may remember their story. When we rescued these sweet brothers, we soon discovered they had eyelid agenesis…meaning they were born with partially-formed eyelids. As a result, their eyelashes and hair were constantly and painfully rubbing against their eyes.
They needed specialized surgeries to relieve their pain and protect their vision. Because of you, we could provide that critical care!
Although we’re still monitoring them, we knew they were ready to be adopted when they were romping and playing, pain-free, as all kittens should. And it wasn’t long before they found a forever home together!
We hope you’ll join us in wishing Sparkle and Twinkle the happiest and brightest days ahead!
Nutmeg Finds Her Forever Home After Arctic Blast Rescue
Nutmeg has come so far since we rescued her just before the Arctic Blast swept across the nation earlier this year.
It took a few weeks of medical care for her to overcome a stubborn upper respiratory infection, but she was a sweetheart through it all. Now, we’re so happy to see Nutmeg find her place in a loving home!

Turns out, Milton has the biggest and most amazing personality once he feels safe enough to show it! We worked closely with a veterinary ally to provide him with medical care, and she says Milton would walk around the office like he owned the place (he even jumped into clients’ laps!).
Now, Milton is bringing all that boldness and love to his new adoptive family. He’s already made himself at home, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.
