From championing historic law and policy change to fearlessly challenging cruel government schemes, Alley Cat Allies is building a world where all cats’ lives are valued and protected.
To keep our steadfast supporters in the know, we are sharing updates on two of our key areas of work, from Maryland to Puerto Rico. The outcome of both could have wide-reaching implications for cats and kittens. That’s why we’re committed to advocacy and action!
Ash’s Law Passes Maryland Subcommittee
We’re on the way to making history for cats with the first-ever comprehensive statewide TNR bill!
Today, Ash’s Law was voted favorably out of the Maryland Agriculture and Aquaculture Subcommittee! Next, it will be voted on by the House Environment and Transportation Committee, then the full House of Delegates and the Senate.
We’re making forward motion, and we’re going to fight until Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the law in Maryland. Alley Cat Allies drafted and named Ash’s Law, and we’re so proud of this groundbreaking legislation. And, we’re so grateful to all of you who have spoken out in support with us!
Ash’s Law would ratify TNR throughout Maryland, creating key protections for community cats and the advocates who care for them. We named the bill in honor of Ash, a community cat who was ripped from her outdoor home in Riverdale, Maryland, impounded, and killed.
When it passes, Ash’s Law will protect community cats from meeting Ash’s cruel, senseless fate. Furthermore, it will set a humane standard for the entire nation (and beyond) to follow!

UPDATE: Our Fight to Protect Puerto Rico Cats is Going Strong
Alley Cat Allies’ fight to protect community cats in Puerto Rico from a lethal U.S. National Park Service (NPS) plan is still going strong.
Our historic lawsuit has successfully prevented the NPS from removing and killing the cats of the famous Paseo del Morro in San Juan to date.
However, the NPS has pivoted to a new scheme to cut the cats off from critical resources, like food and water, under the guise of a “public safety” construction project. Alley Cat Allies is exploring all legal avenues to stop this cruel and unlawful action.
At the same time, our team has been on the ground to guide and support local advocates, including our local Feral Friend Network member Save A Gato, in caring for community cats. We’re working to provide the Paseo cats with food, water, and any needed medical care.
For the sake of cats like Bella, Stripes, and Goldie, we won’t back down. With your support, we’re showing the world that a government cannot treat cats’ lives as disposable and go unchallenged. Learn more at alleycat.org/PuertoRico.
