BETHESDA, MDAs times change so do some careers. Titles like “˜travel agent’ and “˜video store clerk’ are on the decline, but in animal services exciting new careers are emerging.

Thousands of communities across the country are carrying out Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programsand in recent years animal shelters have started creating new positions dedicated to their TNR programs. In the last decade, cities and counties that officially endorse TNR has increased tenfold to more than 430.

“It can be hard to find someone at a shelter with more than three years of experience as a Community Cat Coordinator,” said Becky Robinson, president and founder of Alley Cat Allies. “The job didn’t really exist. Trap-Neuter-Return was something people did in their free time and as volunteers, but we’re seeing more and more shelters hiring staff to manage their city’s TNR efforts and in some cases to carry out TNR themselves.”

With these developments at a local level, demands on national nonprofit Alley Cat Allies have increased as well. “The movement to protect cats has grown tremendouslyand with it, our need for compassionate, committed staff,” said Robinson.

Alley Cat Allies, the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats, is looking for qualified applicants for a number of open full-time positions at its Bethesda, Md. headquarters.
