Alley Cat Allies’ historic federal lawsuit against the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has already impeded the NPS’ plan to remove and kill the community cats of San Juan’s Paseo del Morro, brought the cruel scheme to the world’s attention, and exposed the NPS’ questionable legal authority for developing the plan in the first place. If not for our action, the NPS would have already begun lethal removal of the cats in October of 2024.
We’re only continuing to strengthen our arguments in this critical fight to permanently strike down the NPS’ plan to remove and kill the Paseo del Morro cats.
Recently, we invited Save A Gato, a Puerto Rico organization that has long been involved with the Paseo del Morro cats, to join us as co-plaintiff in our lawsuit. Not only are we arguing that the NPS plan violates the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), but we’re also challenging the NPS’ jurisdictional authority to act against the cats on the Paseo del Morro at all.
Earlier this year, Alley Cat Allies exposed that the NPS made a false certification that its administrative record was complete regarding its lethal plan. The record, in fact, excluded hundreds of public comments, including those of Puerto Rican residents and organizations opposing NPS action against community cats.
In light of the omissions, the federal court allowed Alley Cat Allies to amend its complaint. Our allies at Save A Gato also joined us in fighting the NPS’ inhumane plan.
We are optimistic that the federal judge in our case will make a decision that will stop the NPS from moving forward with lethal action against the Paseo del Morro cats. Alley Cat Allies will not back down until we can declare victory in saving these cats’ lives.
Thank you to our supporters who have stood firmly with us in this fight, and joined our Worldwide Protest to protect the Paseo del Morro cats. We will keep you updated as our lawsuit continues.
