Ripon, California: Feeding Bans Are Cruel and Ineffective
Alley Cat Allies strongly opposes a feeding ban targeting community cats in Ripon, California.
If the ordinance passes, community cat caregivers could be issued a $100 fine just for providing care. We have reached out to the City of Ripon to offer our support for a better way forward: Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).
Feeding bans do not work:
- Cutting off access to food sources that cats have become accustomed to is cruel and causes suffering.
- The cats will not simply go away. They are highly bonded to their outdoor homes. Instead, they roam farther and seek out other food sources.
- People will be penalized for their compassion and discouraged from carrying out TNR, which relies on organized feeding.
TNR is the only humane and effective approach to stabilizing community cat populations. That’s what Ripon officials, and officials worldwide, need to know.

Our Work to Provide Puerto Rico Water Crisis Relief Continues
Alley Cat Allies’ San Juan Cat Protection Team is still on the ground bringing emergency cases of water and wet food to community cat caregivers throughout the city—all at no cost to them.
Along the way, we’re meeting incredible and dedicated Puerto Ricans who in many ways put the well-being of their cats above their own. Cats are truly members of the community in San Juan, and we are honored to support that community when it’s most needed.
Your support makes our swift action possible. Thank you for standing with us, and for the cats, through every challenge. Your gift today strengthens our disaster response and so much more.
Celebrating and Protecting Black Cats—Today and Always
@alleycatallies Every day is a day to appreciate black cats for us, but we’ll take any opportunity to celebrate. So…happy Black Cat Appreciation Day! ??? From educating against the superstition and misinformation that has followed black cats to our work to create laws, policies, and resources that protect cats of every coat color, we’re here for our favorite dark-furred felines. Who’s the black cat YOU are celebrating today? #BlackCatAppreciationDay #blackcats #catsoftiktok #blackcat #catlife
Black Cat Appreciation Day may have passed, but every day is a day to appreciate black cats!
From combating misinformation about black cats to supporting laws and resources that protect cats of every coat color, we’re here for our favorite dark-furred felines. We know you are, too.
The best way to help black cats is the same way we help every cat: advocacy to end policies that would harm or kill them and education to cut through the superstition and bias that underpins these policies.
Saving a Feline Family of Five
Alley Cat Allies works to protect kittens across the nation through education and direct care, especially now that we’re in the thick of kitten season. This little family is just the latest to enter the doors of one of our veterinarian allies, and we’re covering all costs of their treatment.
Right now, mom and kittens are all being treated for upper respiratory infections, and a couple of kittens need some extra care for their eyes. Step one was rescuing them from a shelter that couldn’t provide the aid they needed. Step two is making sure all have nothing but health and happiness ahead!
There are four kittens—all boys—and their mother. We’re still workshopping name ideas as we continue their care.
An Update on Woody, Who Has Come So Far
There are few things we appreciate more than a happy update from a family or caregiver of a cat we saved. Seeing little Woody again (he’s not so little now!) made us smile as we continue our work to save even more kittens this summer.
Back in the spring, Woody was separated from his mother and impounded as a single kitten in a shelter. Unfortunately, that is a very precarious position for a young kitten to be in. He developed a severe upper respiratory infection that needed emergency medical treatment—and thanks to you, we rescued Woody and provided that care.
Today, he’s right where he belongs: in a loving home with plenty of toys all his own! “He still loves to play all day, especially with his favorite toy, his blue fish! He even loves to carry it around the house and settles down for snuggles at night, too,” said Stephanie and Adam, Woody’s adopters. “We love him more each day, and he’s really made himself at home. We feel so lucky we found him!”
