Transforming a community to save cats’ lives takes the right resources and the right network of community members and institutions. Alley Cat Allies’ Feline Frenzy® is all about creating that long-term change by bringing the right people together under the banner of effective, nonlethal action and coexistence between cats and all animals.
In Tempe, Arizona, we kicked off our Feline Frenzy with a high-volume, high-quality Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) clinic for community cats. Working closely with the City of Tempe Office of Animal Welfare and Trusted Paws Veterinary Clinic, we served 82 cats in a single day of action! Each cat was spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies, microchipped, and eartipped. The following day, the cats were returned to their outdoor homes across the city.
Tempe knows that TNR is essential to all humane programs and policies for cats. The city’s Office of Animal Welfare provides TNR funding and services to the community, with the capacity to help 1,000 community cats each year. Alley Cat Allies connected with the office to provide our expert resources and on-the-ground support to expand its TNR efforts.
To strengthen support for community cat caregivers, our team stocked the office’s food bank with cases of wet cat food and hand-delivered more to each caregiver we met. We also equipped the office with our educational materials, so Tempe residents have a one-stop shop for the food and guidance they need to continue their care for cats.
The Formula for Larger Community Change for Cats
Bringing TNR and educational resources is just one aspect of our Feline Frenzy. True change takes investing in the community, collaborating, and building a network of caregivers, veterinarians, organizations, officials, law enforcement, and prosecutors of animal cruelty cases.
While on the ground in Tempe, Alley Cat Allies traveled to several veterinary clinics across the city to share our educational resources and offer support in treating and protecting community cats. While Tempe is a model for city-supported TNR, many veterinary professionals do not actively provide surgeries for TNR to the community.
Making these connections is the first step toward encouraging veterinarians to provide TNR services and bolster access to care for community cats.
For any community to truly protect cats, it must commit to strong enforcement of animal cruelty laws and the maximum penalties for perpetrators. With that goal in mind, our team connected with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office to offer the support of our team of animal cruelty experts in the investigation and prosecution of cruelty cases. We stand ready to send a strong message: cruelty to cats will not be tolerated in Arizona.
Alley Cat Allies is Just Getting Started in Arizona
Alley Cat Allies plans to expand TNR and veterinary support in Tempe, but we’re also thinking bigger. Working with Arizona officials, advocates, organizations, and stakeholders, we’re strategizing more protections in law for cats and kittens.
Our Feline Frenzy taps into a community’s commitment to become a better place for the cats who call it home. The lifesaving resources we build together not only improve cats’ lives but also benefit the people who care for them. It’s 82 cats protected today, countless more protected tomorrow.
