Community Cat Mikey Knows the Secrets Beneath the Boardwalk.

The theme of Global Cat Day 2023 is Cats Are Community™, but what does that really mean? Mikey’s story paints the picture.
Living each day outdoors among the surf and sand of the world-famous Atlantic City Boardwalk in New Jersey, Mikey and his fellow community cats—known as the Boardwalk Cats—are as much a fixture of the famous tourist spot as the casinos and resorts. Those attractions are atop the wooden walkways, but the Boardwalk Cats make their home in the secret spaces beneath.
Since 2000, Alley Cat Allies has cared for these community cats living along the boardwalk through our Boardwalk Cats Project®. The project is a city-endorsed Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program that brings together community leaders, advocates, and the public to protect and improve the lives of their community’s cats.
Locals and visitors of the boardwalk alike absolutely adore Mikey and all of the Boardwalk Cats. They truly consider them friends and neighbors and would do anything to protect them.
Unfortunately, not every community has the same protections for community cats. That’s why Global Cat Day, October 16, is so important. At its core, it is a day when advocates worldwide join Alley Cat Allies to lead the charge to protect cats and kittens.
Mikey is Community. Cats Are Community. We are their voice, so let’s be heard.
