Contact: [email protected] or Rebekah DeHaven, 301-771-1561

WHEN: Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at 10 a.m.
WHERE:  D.C. Council, Room 412
1350 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.
WHO: Rebekah DeHaven, staff attorney, Alley Cat Allies, will testify at the meeting and be available for interviews before and after the meeting.
WHAT: D.C. Council Committee on Transportation and the Environment Public Roundtable on the Draft 2015 Wildlife Action Plan for D.C.

Rebekah DeHaven will testify against the plan on behalf of Alley Cat Allies, the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats. Alley Cat Allies was established in the District 25 years ago and has 4,000 supporters here.

WHY: DeHaven will explain that D.C. is a leader in progressive, effective and humane animal control, and that “revisiting” the role of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) in the District’s success would be a giant step backward.

She will testify that the number of municipalities embracing TNR has grown from 23 in 2003 to more than 500 today.

DeHaven will show why capturing free-ranging cats will just lead into killing them, and why “low-level ad hoc culling” will actually increase the feral cat population.
