Alley Cat Allies’ Rapid Response Team deployed immediately to Oahu, Hawaii, over the weekend to deliver disaster relief to cats affected and displaced by historic flooding. Officials have determined that it is the worst flood event in Hawai’i in over 20 years.
Support our Flood Response with a 2X-Matched gift
Much of the island of Oahu was placed under evacuation orders over the weekend as a severe storm caused flash floodwaters to rush through neighborhoods, destroying buildings and cars and knocking out power for thousands.
Community cats are savvy survivors and have deep-rooted instincts that guide them to higher ground during floods. However, many likely fled their original outdoor homes, pushed out by the waters before they receded, or are returning to neighborhoods before their caregivers do.
Additionally, many owned cats who were not evacuated may also have become displaced.
To care for and protect these cats, Alley Cat Allies has been setting up feeding stations with fresh food and water. And, we are supporting local community cat caregivers in providing resources for dozens of cats and kittens.
We’re just getting started. Right now, we are strategizing further action to save cats’ lives with local advocates, including medical care and rescue. Throughout the week, we will deploy more members of our Rapid Response Team to continue relief efforts.
Cats will need support for a long recovery period ahead, and the scale of the flood damage is just now starting to be assessed. As our Rapid Response Team works to protect Hawaii cats through it all, your support is vital.
Please consider an emergency gift today, while it will be matched to go twice as far to power our flood disaster response.
Thank you to all of our supporters and donors for being there for cats—when disaster strikes and always.
Prepare Your Family in Case of Disaster
Natural disasters can strike with little warning. That is why the best way to protect your family, including its feline members, is to stay prepared. Always plan to evacuate with your indoor cats. For community cats, who have honed instincts during disaster events, some preparation can still go a long way.
