Right now, Alley Cat Allies is on the ground in the Los Angeles area providing emergency care and support to cats and kittens impacted by the Palisades fire, Eaton fire, Hurst fire, and other ongoing fires.
As of Friday afternoon, our Rapid Response Team is heading into a burn zone to search for cats who need immediate aid. We have connected with advocates, including San Diego nonprofit organization Femme Felines, and veterinarians actively helping animals and we are covering the costs of treatment and boarding for injured or displaced cats.
With the fires blazing on and more than 150,000 people under evacuation orders, we expect to see many stories like Socks’, a tuxedo kitten whose family lost their home in the disaster. We are covering Socks’ veterinary exam and boarding and gearing up to provide more cats with any needed treatment, including for burns and smoke inhalation.
Despite what Socks has been through, she’s already in good spirits and “making biscuits.”
“Seeing the resilience of the community and the outpouring of support has blown me away. Thank you to Alley Cat Allies for opening your heart and resources to the animals here,” said Dr. McEvilly of Palms & Paws Veterinary Center in Santa Monica, where Socks is receiving care.
Alongside veterinary support, we are providing supplies including cat food and bowls, microchip scanners, oxygen masks for cats and dogs rescued from the burn areas, chlorhexidine, and carriers.
Cats, especially community cats who live outdoors, are incredible survivors and will continue to emerge from the devastation in the next days and weeks. Alley Cat Allies plans to provide immediate support and stay involved in the long recovery period ahead.
Thank you to our supporters for making our disaster response possible. The situation in California is evolving rapidly and we will keep you updated from on the ground. This is just the beginning.
