Even over the holidays, Alley Cat Allies is on the ground protecting cats! On December 22, we held a no-cost Community Cat Food Bank in collaboration with Hill Country Humane Society in Granite Shoals, Texas. In just a couple of hours, we provided food for more than 250 community cats and kittens!

During the holiday season, that support is especially meaningful. With so many people facing food insecurity and financial hardship, Alley Cat Allies is committed to helping ensure no one has to choose between caring for their cats and caring for themselves.

That is the heart of our Cats Are Family, Too™—Keeping Families Together™ program, which expands access to critical resources like no-cost cat food, veterinary care, and other supplies for people caring for cats indoors and outdoors.

At the food bank yesterday, we were heartened to meet so many caregivers who dedicate their time, money, and compassion to community cats. And, we were proud to provide each caregiver not only with cases of wet and dry cat food, but also Alley Cat Allies’ expert educational materials.

Granite Shoals Has Come So Far for Cats

Our Community Cat Food Bank was not our first effort in Granite Shoals. In 2023, when community cats and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) were threatened in the city, Alley Cat Allies took swift action to defend them. Granite Shoals advocates, organizations, and law enforcement stood with us in support of their cat community members.

Guided by our expertise, Granite Shoals went on to implement a TNR program—both in practice and in law! In March of 2024, the city updated its animal ordinance with heavy input from Alley Cat Allies to include language that protects TNR and community cats. Later that same year, Alley Cat Allies covered the costs of a community cat spay and neuter clinic.

It’s All About Long-Lasting Community Change

Alley Cat Allies’ work is never about putting out a single fire. It’s about bringing a community together to implement evidence-based humane programs and expand resources that protect and improve cats’ lives long-term.

Our action in Granite Shoals began by confronting harmful and disturbing rhetoric against community cats in a single meeting. From there, we helped unite advocates in the city and beyond to build lasting, positive change for cats and kittens.

We’re not done yet. This Community Cat Food Bank is just the latest step in Granite Shoals’ community transformation. Community cats throughout the city and surrounding areas will enjoy meals this holiday season, and it’s all possible because of our supporters like you!
