Hello,

On Global Cat Day, October 16, we’re sending a critical message that Cats Are Community. If you wonder what we mean, Leo’s story is a heartwarming example!

Bold tabby cat Leo (pronounced “Leh-ou”) is a resident of the vibrant, ancient city of Istanbul, Turkey, where feline citizens can be seen going about their daily business just as much as the human ones. He is beloved and cared for by his neighborhood just as he is—an independent community cat who thrives in his outdoor home.

Leo Portraits

Istanbul’s long and storied love of cats dates back to the Ottoman Empire, which held the domestic cat in very high regard. Today, respect for cats outdoors is still ingrained in the city’s rich culture.

Leo is no exception! He makes his home near a local restaurant known for its cat-friendly atmosphere, and when you see locals’ eyes light up when they talk about him, you understand just how loved he is! Leo is a true community cat, and his human neighbors care for him, make space for him, and respect his boundaries.

Leo is community! Let’s protect him and all cats worldwide like community!
