Des Moines, Iowa –  Alley Cat Allies is kicking off Global Cat Day®, a day of action to protect cats as members of our communities worldwide, with a no-cost cat food distribution for the greater Des Moines area. Working with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Alley Cat Allies will conduct the first distribution event on Wednesday, October 11, as the start of a larger program to provide critical resources for Des Moines cats and kittens.

More than 26,000 pounds of cat food will be available to Iowa cat caregivers, with a second food bank distribution planned for later in the month on October 25.

“We are thrilled to work with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to provide critical resources for cats and their caregivers in the greater Des Moines area,” said Coryn Julien, director of programs and communication at Alley Cat Allies. “This year’s Global Cat Day theme is Cats Are Community™. Sharing this cat food with Iowans reinforces our rallying call that cats are truly community members and providing for and protecting them and their families is a top priority.”

The food distribution in Des Moines builds upon a series of cat food relief shipments that Alley Cat Allies has provided through food banks and pantries throughout the U.S. in recent years through its Keeping Families Together™ program.

“One of the biggest challenges people in our community are currently facing during economic hardship is the ability to feed their pets and community cats. This resource from Alley Cat Allies makes a tremendous difference for the cats in Des Moines and the people who care for them,” said Josh Fiala with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. “We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this generous gift to our pet food pantry and the future events we have together this year.”

Alley Cat Allies is collaborating with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa on further programming to benefit cats in the community, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.
