Deterring Insects When the kitties come around for turkey and tuna, the last thing they want to see is a bowl full of bugs! Check out these tips for keeping ants and other bugs out of cat food. Raise the food off the ground. Place bowls on a wooden pallet, for instance, or use a feeding station. They’re easy to build too! Check out our DIY guide to feeding stations. Try one of Alley Cat Allies’ tried and true ant-proof bowls. Surround the bowl with a ring of baking soda or food-grade diatomaceous earth without chemical additives. (Do not use diatomaceous earth sold for swimming pool filters it’s not safe for cats.) Create an ant-proof moat by filling a tray with about ½ inch to an inch of water, and then put the bowl on the tray. Put the tray on a feeding station for extra protection. Keep the feeding area clean, especially in hot, humid weather, and always remove feeding dishes after 30 minutes to avoid attracting bugs and other animals. Cut back or completely cut out wet food. Dry food attracts fewer bugs, but be sure to use more dry food to compensate.
