Alley Cat Allies Applauds Arlington, TX, for Adopting Trap-Neuter-Return Resolution
Advocacy group worked closely with city officials to create humane solution for community cats
BETHESDA, MD—Alley Cat Allies, the nation’s largest advocacy organization for cats, congratulates Arlington, Texas, for passing a resolution this week that approves a Trap-Neuter-Return program for community cats in the city. Alley Cat Allies worked closely with city officials to create the resolution which was adopted unanimously at the meeting by the city council.
“Kudos to Arlington city officials for recognizing that TNR is the way of the future,” said Becky Robinson, president and co-founder of Alley Cat Allies. “TNR is the only humane solution for community cats, and it is also the solution most Americans support. By adopting this resolution, Arlington joins more than 300 cities and counties that have embraced TNR over the past decade.”
In May, Alley Cat Allies staff attorney Elizabeth Holtz wrote to Arlington city council members urging them to replace their “catch and kill” program for feral cats with TNR, a management plan where feral cats already living outdoors are vaccinated and sterilized by a veterinarian, then returned to their original colony locations.
TNR is humane and more effective than catch-and-kill, which has been carried out for decades at significant cost to taxpayers, Holtz said, adding that TNR also creates community partnerships and citizen support. Catch and kill, on the other hand, fails to reduce the population of feral cats because when some cats are removed from an area, the remaining cats continue to reproduce.
Local advocates and Alley Cat Allies will help educate residents about TNR, and work with the city to conduct TNR on community cats. “We really appreciate that the resolution recognizes that caregivers are allies and that it celebrates the good work caregivers do in their community,” Holtz said.
