Remembering Shannon Moore
When 36-year-old Shannon Moore died on May 31, the animals of Louisiana lost a dedicated, passionate ally.
“Horses starving, cats multiplying, dogs about to be put down. It was all important to her," said Jennie Adams, Shannon’s mother. "The state of animal care before the storm, it never set well with her. And after the storm, there were just so many horror stories."
Ever energetic, Shannon Moore played a key role in many of the post-Katrina rescue efforts in and around New Orleans. Most recently she spearheaded a grassroots support network for the Louisiana's Pet Evacuation Bill, which passed through the state Senate unanimously the day before her death.
Shannon served as a community coordinator for Alley Cat Allies’ Feline Frenzy spay/neuter event that fixed over 1,100 New Orleans-area cats during a three-week drive. She was also an active volunteer for Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO), providing foster care to many needy cats and kittens.
“She touched so many lives.” says LeAnne Goudeau, a friend and fellow rescuer. “She would start a lot of projects, get them where they would be self-sufficient, then pretty much hand that project off and move on.”
Robin Beaulieu, one of the leaders of Animal Rescue New Orleans, worked closely with Shannon. "She was just a fearless, tireless, dedicated animal person," Beaulieu says. "With the pet evacuation bill, her legend will live on. And hopefully in Louisiana, no one will ever have to leave their animals behind again."
"I think she was just the kind of soul who was probably more attuned to animals. . .” Mrs. Adams added. “She was just a wonderful, beautiful, empathetic, compassionate person."
The pet evacuation bill that was so important to Shannon, S.B. 607, will be heard before the state House judiciary committee Thursday, June 8. For more information on the bill, click here.
Shannon’s husband, Robert observed that “Shannon had a special affinity for the plight of cats and has always appreciated the work Alley Cat Allies has done.” For this reason, Jennie (Shannon’s mom) and Robert have asked that donations be made to Alley Cat Allies Compassion Fund to help feral and stray cats in the Gulf Coast region. In this way, her life’s passion will continue.
All of us at Alley Cat Allies wish to express our gratitude to Shannon Moore's family for their thoughtfulness and generosity.
