FERAL CAT SUPPORTERS PROTEST MONESSEN CAT ROUNDUP
Groups say ineffective ordinance is a death sentence for cats

BETHESDA, MD — Opponents of a new adopted city ordinance that has resulted in the killing of cats in the city of Monessen, Pennsylvania will protest outside the City Council offices on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Noon.

The city has ignored requests from Alley Cat Allies and local groups and citizens to meet in person to discuss and implement humane and effective programs and policies, including low-cost spay and neuter, education, and Trap-Neuter-Return.

“City officials have persisted, despite the outcry of many residents. The roundup has resulted in beloved pet cats and companion felines being killed by a local shelter—with no notice to citizens of the city-funded trapping,” said Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies.

Local feral cat protection groups, including the Coalition for a Humane Monessen, will attend the rally, supported in their efforts by Alley Cat Allies, the national advocate for stray and feral cats. “Three dozen cats have already been killed by this uninformed and capricious law,” said Robinson. “Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)—where cats are humanely trapped, taken to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and then returned to their outdoor home—is the only effective and humane approach to outdoor cats.”
