Los Angeles Says:
We Want Trap-Neuter-Return Back!
A recent court order has suspended city funding and promotion of Trap-Neuter-Return programs in Los Angeles – and we need your help to get it back.
Before the court order, Los Angeles – like many progressive communities across the U.S. – had embraced Trap-Neuter-Return. For the past fifteen years, the city provided low-cost spay/neuter vouchers that helped to support and sustain many community Trap-Neuter-Return programs.
Due to a disappointing decision by a county judge – based on a lawsuit that never should have been filed – L.A.’s Trap-Neuter-Return programs are in jeopardy. Under the court ruling, the city cannot even tell the public that privately funded programs are available . This simple act will push more cats into a failed sheltering system, where the vast majority – 70 percent or more, nationally – are killed.
Trap-Neuter-Return Saves Lives
Feral cats are a natural part of the landscape, and have co-existed with humans - living in close proximity - for thousands of years. They can be found all over the U.S. in every setting – including the most urban, like Los Angeles. Feral cats are not socialized to people, preferring to live in family groups called colonies. While they are the same species as domestic cats, they are not adoptable and are almost always killed in animal shelters.
Trap-Neuter-Return is the best course of action for feral cats. It ends the breeding cycle, stabilizes populations and improves the cats’ health.
Help Us Take Action
Alley Cat Allies will not let this terrible decision – and the faulty logic it is based on – stand unchallenged. We have been in close and frequent contact with our colleagues, supporters and friends in Los Angeles, helping them to ensure that spay/neuter funding for L.A.’s feral cats and Trap-Neuter-Return education is reinstated as soon as possible.
