Alley Cat Allies’ Programs Director Aileen Walden congratulates Mayor Akers.

The Animal Welfare Federation of New Jersey has awarded Mayor William Akers of Seaside Heights, N.J. with its Scott McVay Unity Award and a $1,000 cash prize.

Alley Cat Allies nominated Mayor Akers for the Unity Award for his support of a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral cats living at the Seaside Heights boardwalk.

Seaside Heights Animal Welfare Group (SSHAWG) and Mayor Akers reached out to us for help after Superstorm Sandy ravaged the city. We were thrilled to help and provided guidance on setting up a formal TNR program modeled after Atlantic City’s successful Boardwalk Cats Project.
