Today Alley Cat Allies is the acknowledged leader of feral cat advocacy throughout the United States. Our life-saving work would not be possible without the concerted efforts of our network of supporters and volunteers. As we look at what Alley Cat Allies can accomplish, we are newly inspired. Today the most urgent problem facing stray and feral cats is the “catch and kill” policy imposed by our nation’s shelter system. More than 70 percent of all cats that enter shelters are killed there. Alley Cat Allies and our supporters say, “We can change this, we have a solution.”

We recognize that in the face of this most pressing issue for feral and stray cats—to stop the killing—inaction is not an option. And Alley Cat Allies possesses something that defuses even the most hardened skepticism: an affirmative and pragmatic solution.

This will be a demanding fight, but Alley Cat Allies has the staying power. We know how to break down resistance and move positive alternatives forward. Just look at a few things we accomplished this fiscal year.

  • Together we worked to change public policy and helped defeat feeding bans in Torrance, CA, and Pittsburgh, PA.
  • We answered the call for help from Baltimore, MD, and Chicago, IL, and responded by bringing our Every Kitty—Every City campaign there.
  • We expanded our successful, long-term project on the Atlantic City, NJ, boardwalk to include surrounding neighborhoods.
  • We co-founded the National Capital Area Spay & Neuter Center in Washington, DC.

Our activities advanced feral cat advocacy through three key initiatives: Education & Outreach, Public Policy Reform, and Direct Care for feral cats. Under these umbrellas, we are building a national movement, a true community of like-minded people who share both a concern for cats and a vision of how to make their lives better. Together, we are engaged in advocacy and intervention in communities nationwide. We develop and provide materials to caregivers and policy makers, help the news media understand and report on feral cat issues, and support signature programs, such as the Feral Friends Network, Every Kitty—Every City, and National Feral Cat Day. Moving forward into 2008, with your support, we will continue to push forward on all three fronts to stop the killing. Although great challenges remain before us, we are confident. We have seen how much a committed network of individuals can achieve. Because of you, when people look for ways to protect feral cats, they can turn to Alley Cat Allies.

A more detailed accounting of our activities is included in the following pages of this report. We trust that when you read them, you will be proud of what you have helped us achieve. This year’s successes are invigorating, but Alley Cat Allies takes the long view of change. We look forward to working with you for the benefit of stray and feral cats in 2008 and beyond.

Thank you again for your support.
