FREDERICK, Md. April 16, 2019 Alley Cat Allies, the global engine of change for cats, will host a free public workshop on Saturday, April 20, about making a lifesaving difference for cats in the community. The workshop is scheduled from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the C. Burr Artz Public Library, 110 E. Patrick St. in Frederick. Attendees will learn why Trap-Neuter-Return, or TNR, is the only humane and effective approach to community cats, sometimes called feral cats.

“TNR is a mainstream solution that benefits cats, shelters, animal control and the entire community, and we look forward to discussions in Frederick that will lead to better protections for cats in the community,” said Becky Robinson, president and founder of Alley Cat Allies.

Through TNR, community cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, eartipped (the universal sign that indicates a cat has been through TNR), vaccinated and returned to their outdoor homes.

TNR is also sound public policy. It effectively and humanely addresses community cats, reduces shelter intake and “euthanasia” numbers, and decreases calls to animal services, which saves taxpayer dollars in the process. Thousands of communities conduct grassroots, volunteer-led TNR programs, and hundreds have adopted official TNR ordinances and policies.

The free workshop is sponsored by Frederick AdvoCats. Additional speakers in the workshop will include Frederick County Animal Control, Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter and Barn Cat Buddies.
