Selected Accomplishments

National Feral Cat Day, celebrated each October 16 since 2001, has become one special day every year when feral cat advocates all across this country stage events that educate their communities about nonlethal feline population control. Sponsored by Alley Cat Allies, NFCD attracts thousands of participants and has made its way onto the national calendar.

Chicago, Illinois, and surrounding counties. ACA, working with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary’s No More Homeless Pets campaign, organized a coalition of activists, caregivers, humane organizations to launch pilot Trap-Neuter-Return programs, provide public spay/neuter education, find homes for tame kittens, and present a united front to the community as a viable safety net for feral cats. In addition, ACA provided start-up resources for a regularly scheduled feral cat spay day, the first of its kind in the area.

New York. ACA consulted with dozens of community leaders and hundreds of residents on how to solve feline overpopulation. ACA participated in a two-day summit that was the catalyst for a countywide pilot Trap-Neuter-Return program in Erie County. In Fulton, Hamilton, and Montgomery counties, ACA conducted workshops and networking sessions, testified at public hearings, and provided residents with guidance, materials, and ongoing support.

Palm Beach, Florida’s feral cat population grew unchecked for years due to ineffective and costly control methods. Through ACA’s education and advocacy, in 2003, Palm Beach adopted and funded a communitywide Trap-Neuter-Return program.

Resources

Alley Cat Allies is able to make a difference to the cats and caregivers in all these areas because ACA has researched the issues, published white papers on topics critical to this movement, and produced videos, factsheets, brochures, newsletters, and other materials that enable grassroots organizations and activists to make their case effectively.

ACA publishes wide-ranging, comprehensive literature on the humane care of feral cats, including:

The Alley Cat Allies’ training and public policy videos are credited with saving the lives of tens of thousands of cats who now receive proper care and management:

National Outreach

ACA regularly participates in national conferences on nonlethal feral cat population control for veterinarians, animal control officers, shelter directors, and colony caregivers. President Becky Robinson has addressed conferences throughout North America and in Central Europe, introducing participants to Trap-Neuter-Return and thereby making it a vital component of the animal protection movement.

ACA staff members, including Robinson and Executive Director Donna Wilcox, are frequently interviewed by national and international print and broadcast media and regularly respond to editorials, news reports, and requests for comment on feral cat issues.

Perhaps the most important achievement is that, since 1990, Alley Cat Allies has motivated and assisted hundreds of grassroots activists to start programs for managing feral cat colonies in their communities. These small organizations have expanded and become models for other cities developing new programs.
